Just a quick note about how my season is going so far…
My first race of the season was the Grizzly sprint triathlon in Missoula,
way back in April. I used that as a training race, but ended up doing really
well. June 1st was then my top priority triathlon race of the season, the
Boise Half-Ironman. This was a tough season to train for the biking for
an early season race. I trained pretty hard for the run and swim, but not
so much for the bike. Ironically, I did a personal best on the bike. The
swim was miserably cold with all the late spring snowmelt in the Boise
reservoir. My time certainly reflected the cold conditions. The run was
beautiful and fast. Overall, I was very happy with my time considering
how I trained. Since that race, I have pretty much parked my road bike
in my living room and switched over to trail running. I ran the Old Gabe
25 km race in late June as a training run for the Ridge Run and did surprisingly
well. It got me really excited for trail running. I’ve been out running
in the mountains every weekend since, and as many evenings as I can manage.
Trail running seems to suit me pretty well, as I never seemed to get overuse
injuries on the trails, while I’m usually fighting tendonitis somewhere
in my body when I run long distance on the roads.
The Bridger Ridge Run was
as tough as ever, but exciting and fun too. This was my second time running
it. I finished ten minutes faster than the last time. Coming down off the
top of Baldy all I could think was, “just get to the finish and never again.”
Less than 24 hours later, not only was I wondering if I can get into next
year’s race, but started thinking about a fall marathon and some other
area trail runs this coming year.
So now I’m training to run a half marathon
with my dad in Texas and am starting to think about transitioning to the
ski season. I’m planning to do the Rendevous this winter in West Yellowstone.
This will be my first ski race, and I just picked up skate skiing a few
years back, so I’ve got some work to do.
